Breast Cancer Survivor Wins Right to Swim Topless in Public

A woman who had both breasts removed after a battle with cancer has won the right to swim topless in Seattle’s public pools, according to the NY Daily News.

Jodi Jaecks, 45, was recovering from a double mastectomy when she discovered that wearing a full bathing suit would be too painful for her scars.

Considering there was no longer anything to "cover up," the staff at the pool in Seattle's Central District allowed Jaecks to swim topless.

But an aquatics manager for the city parks department disapproved, telling her she'd need to hide her breast-less chest if she wanted to continue using the pool.

Jaecks said, "If I called myself a man and walked into that pool they would have no problem with my body. But if I am a woman who had breast cancer, with the exact same body, and I go in there, then it's offensive and inappropriate."

The city has since reversed their decision and will make an exception to its dress policy for public pools, Parks Superintendent Christopher Williams said in a statement.
