Colorectal Cancer Tests Save Lives

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cancer killer of men and women in the United States.

Colorectal cancer in its early stages usually doesn't cause any symptoms.

Tell your doctor if you have any of these symptoms:

·         Blood in or on your stool (bowel movement)

·         Stomach pain, aches, or cramps that do not go away

·         Weight loss and you don't know why

Colorectal cancer occurrence rates are highest among African Americans. Additional risk factors for getting colorectal cancer include:

 ·      Your age – everyone who is older than 50 has a risk of getting colorectal cancer.

·         Your family's medical history – you are more at risk if other family members have had CRC.

The good news is that about 90% of people live five or more years when their colorectal cancer is found early through testing.  If you are between the ages of 50 and 70, there’s more than one screening test – you can talk with your doctor to determine which test is best for you:

·         Colonoscopy –  a medical procedure done by a physician (every 10 years)

·         Stool test (FOBT/FIT) – can be done at home (every year)

·         Flexible sigmoidoscopy – a medical procedure done by a physician (seldom done)

If you believe you are at increased risk, ask your doctor if you should begin screening earlier than age 50.

Most insurances cover CRC screening tests.

Colon cancer may not cause symptoms in the early stages.  Get tested!  Testing saves lives!
