Hillman Performing Arts Series Announces 2011-2012 Lineup

The Hillman Center for Performing Arts at Shady Side Academy has announced the lineup for the 2011-2012 season of the Hillman Performing Arts Series. The series features six family-friendly shows from October 2011 through April 2012. All performances are held Saturdays at 7:30 p.m.in the Richard E. Rauh Theater of the Hillman Center for Performing Arts on the Shady Side Academy Senior School campus, located at 423 Fox Chapel Road, Fox Chapel.

Tickets for the series or individual shows can be purchased online or by calling the Hillman Center Box Office at 412-968-3040. A six-show series subscription costs just $125 for adults, $110 for seniors and $90 for students. Individual show tickets range from $5 to $35 per person. The 2011-2012 season lineup includes:

Oct. 22, 2011: Illusionist Stephen Knight’s The Magic of the Night – Rooted in the traveling midnight ghost shows of the 1930s-1960s, this haunted magic show is the ideal Halloween event for all ages. Imagine an energetic Las Vegas magic show in the atmospheric setting of Disney’s Haunted Mansion. The Magic of the Night promises thrills and chills with illusions, lights, music, special effects and pyrotechnics.

Nov. 12, 2011: Animal Exploration With Jarod Miller –Jarod Miller, America’s youngest zoo director, spotlights live animals in this one-of-a-kind adventure that has been presented to thousands of audiences, ranging from The Tonight Show With Jay Leno to the White House. The Hillman brings the zoo to you as Miller and his animal friends introduce the animal kingdom with its unique traits, natural environments and lifestyles.

Jan. 14, 2012: The Platters and The Marvelettes – Come groove to classic songs with these original Motown wonder bands as they perform their best-loved hits! Croon along with The Platters, famous for their platinum love power ballads such as Only You, Unchained Melody and Smoke Gets in Your Eyes. The Marvelettes will sing their pop gems including Please Mr. Postman and Beechwood 45789.

Feb. 18, 2012: Carnegie Mellon Chamber Orchestra – This talented ensemble has enchanted audiences at prestigious institutions across the country. Join world-renowned Ronald Zollman, who has conducted 150 orchestras on five continents, for an evening of musical amazement. The program features audience favorites, such as Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and Gran Partita, as well as Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht.

March 24, 2012: Elements of Humor Comedy Tour – Four stand-up comedians, representing different styles and backgrounds, will keep you in stitches with their standup and improv acts. Kristen Schaal (Flight of the Conchords, The Daily Show), Hannibal Buress (Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock), Faye Lane (Faye Lane’s Beauty Shop Stories) and Ted Alexandro (Comedy Central Presents) conspire to provide an evening of gut-busting humor.

April 21, 2011: Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre – A two-for-one ballet extravaganza! First, Hungry Heart brings “The Boss” Bruce Springsteen’s music to life. Then the melodies of George and Ira Gershwin will keep things swingin’ in A Gershwin Fantasy. The performance hearkens back to the elegance, glamour and musical ingenuity of the Jazz Age, giving the audience a bird’s-eye view of Viktor Plotnikov’s sophisticated choreography.

The Hillman Center for Performing Arts, established in 2004, is one of Western Pennsylvania’s newest cultural venues. Its flagship offering, the Hillman Performing Arts Series, presents programs of excellence that represent Pittsburgh’s cultural traditions while celebrating global artistic innovation. Special emphasis is placed on family-friendly programming.
