Maine GOP Chairman Apologizes for Claims of Voter Fraud by “Mysterious Black People”

Maine GOP Chairman Charlie Webster claimed that since he had never seen any Black people in some rural parts of Maine, the fact that they came out to vote meant that there was voter fraud. Now the chairman is realizing that making sweeping blanket statements about Black people can get him into trouble and he has issued an apology.

In a statement, according to the Portland Press, he said,

“It was my intention to talk not about race but about perceived voting irregularities. However, my comments were made without proof of wrongdoing, and they had the unintended consequence of casting aspersions on an entire group of Americans. For that, I am truly sorry.”

Speaking to a local television station, last week, Webster said,

“In some parts of rural Maine, there were dozens, dozens of black people who came in and voted on Election Day. Everybody has a right to vote, but nobody in town knows anyone who’s black.”

Vowing to investigate, also said,

“How did that happen? I don’t know. We’re going to find out.”

Maine Democratic Party Chairman, Ben Grant, responded to Webster’s comments calling them racist. The Maine NAACP also called the comments  “offensive and insulting.”

At the time of making his inflamed comments, Webster had even said that he was going to investigate the alleged fraud. He even claimed that he had the intention of sending thank you notes to all voters and said that he would know there was fraud if the notes were returned because of falsified addresses. During his apology, he stated that he would not be conducting an investigation, any longer.
